The effect is hypnotic.  Weight loss can actually happen when one partakes of hypnosis for losing weight.  The hypnotherapist induces a hypnotic trance and then begins to give you hypnotic suggestions like “I will only eat healthy, low fat foods” or “I will only eat 1200 calories per day” or “I will restrict my portion sizes and not overeat”.  The more specific the suggestion, the better it gets into the brain to be followed later by the individual when they wake up from their trance.
